"The flag has been a dominant symbol for 250 years. Of late, America has fallen on hard times for many reasons, and with it came a lessening of “Old Glory’s” glory. This painting is done in recognition of the nation’s global status issues. In 1958, Jasper Johns executed a powerful, seminal work of encaustic on panel called Three Flags. This painting is an ironic, distant reflection of the difference in US status between 1958 and today."
