"Growing up in Roanoke in the 1950s and 60s, I witnessed the hard-won triumphs of the Civil Rights movement. When our maid went to DC for King’s historic “I have a dream” speech, Mama half-joked, “I hope you’re not going to protest.” But I was certain Rama was standing in the crowd we saw on TV the next day. My parents were distressed, but I was heartened by the world opening up. Yet this past year, we saw our federal government take up arms against diversity, equality, and integration. We watched on TV as I.C.E. and immigration agents arrested and interred people in privately run concentration camps. We saw them summarily execute two American citizens who got in their way. This winter, I didn’t set out to make “protest” pictures, but in February when I drew several rows of people atop a colorful abstract painting, I saw that I had done just that. The drawing went quickly, and in the faces of the folks who had emerged, I saw a cross-section of my strong, beautiful country. Immediately, the title came to me: What Color IS America? We are all colors! And that’s a very good thing!"
