"Remembering Roanoke families who were pepper sprayed in 2020 while walking in a march to memorialize black lives murdered in this nation, I was disgusted by the response of our authorities who sent not only local police but state and national guards.  I have reinterpreted the scenario as a part of a beloved peaceful parade, in a central recognizable locale,  in order to emphasize how Roanoke is still known for its segregation. My work reconciles this history and our ability to heal generational fears and wounds, from slavery to social discriminations of today. We have come a long way as a nation, and yet after 250 years of incredible suffering and astonishing brilliance—to develop a society to prosper in multicultural beauty, wisdom, and education—the lack of response and justice for crimes against humanity has continued to hold back our potential. The erosion of social dignities in recent years by this nation’s highest authorities has shown just how many old disgusting beliefs—greed, fear, and separatism—have been hidden and simmering for far too long."
