Scott Maynard grew up in Michigan, the son of two teachers. His parents encouraged him to pay attention to the beauty of the world around him, especially the landscapes and waterways that define Michigan. He studied commercial art in college but soon shifted to art education. For nearly twenty years he taught art in Michigan and Virginia—guiding students from kindergarten through high school. He has always found deep satisfaction in helping others develop their artistic voice while continuing to explore his own, particularly in painting and pottery.
​Painters such as Caravaggio and JMW Turner have long inspired Scott with their mastery of light. In 2024, Scott stepped away from the classroom to pursue art full time. Today he paints and creates pottery, driven by a simple truth: he loves to make things. Whether he is working with a brush or shaping clay on the wheel, he is drawn to creating objects that are both beautiful and, in the case of pottery, useful. Whether it is the dramatic atmosphere of an approaching storm or the vivid hues of a hot Virginia summer afternoon, Scott strives to capture the emotional resonance of light and share that experience with others.
